Donay Coughlin is a Toronto-based painter.

The nude has long been a preoccupation throughout the history of art. Continuing in that tradition, and informed by his experience and education in the design and construction of functional objects and spaces, Donay’s paintings are disciplined explorations of the human body: natural form as program for design. He does this through geometric forms, shapes and colours. The backgrounds of Donay’s paintings are created using both hands at once, thus making him an ambidextrous action painter.

As a child, Donay was educated in classical oil painting by artist Anne LeFrancoise. In 1994, he moved to Toronto to study architecture at the University of Toronto and later worked for architect Gino Pin in Yellowknife, NT.

Today, while not at the easel, Donay is building and renovating homes in Toronto.
